Over the last four months, Specialist Tunnel Excavation and Tesmec S.p.A have been busy with a unique mining opportunity, where we have been engaged to undertake a trial to provide efficiency to a long standing drill and blast operation in an open pit coal mine. The results have exceeded our expectations and we look forward to continuing discussions with our client for a long term outcome.
In addition to the productivity KPIs that were targeted and exceeded, additional positive outcomes from the trial were the quality of the drill and blast areas produced, efficiencies to drill and blast operations, and the dozer size being able to be dropped from a D11 to D10 as no further ripping required which has OHS benefits for operators.
The new (third) track separates northbound freight from all-stops passenger train movements along the steep incline between Epping and Thornleigh. This will help provide additional capacity for northbound (interstate container) freight trains, particularly during the daytime when passenger trains currently have priority.
